Rituales, descentramientos territoriales y niveles de identidad: La Semana Santa Marinera de Valencia
2011
The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the Semana Santa Marinera processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. Media coverage of the ritual means that new virtual communities with no fixed territorial base are created, and the complexity of this phenomenon …
From agricultural to tourist production
2010
This contribution starts off from taking account of the crisis in the agricultural sector. This sector has been “trivialised” by erroneous policies and market rules. However, at present the trend is changing: “demand for environment” is increasing, as well as the attempt of taking actions and policies favouring sustainable development. At the same time, notwithstanding the different meanings attached to the concept of sustainability, a wave of revaluation of rural areas is rising: the countryside is now considered as a source of local cultural values. Its exploitation as a tourist attraction, which is progressively taking off, is to be considered in this context. Natural and cultural assets…
Destinationskrimis als identitätsstiftende Kulturräume. Die Stadt Valencia in Lokalkrimis deutscher Autoren
2021
Belìce Valley: from earthquake to local development perspectives
2019
This paper aims to retrace, through a critic study of the scientific debate, the Belice Valley’s territorial context after the 1968 violent earthquake and to identify the actual development perspectives of the area. By using official dataset and consolidated bibliography we identify the peculiar weakness of the socio-economical structure of Belice Valley, a marginal territory of Sicily (Italy), when the earthquake stroke, but also the start of a local identity building process in the aftermath of the seism. We also recognize, in the LAG—Local Action Group—strategy, a possibility to strenghten, nowadays, the local development of the area through the utilization of its milieu and its own pote…

Design e Artigianato in Sicilia. Scambio e contaminazione tra forme diverse della progettualità.
2023
While travelling on the fast tracks of the digital world, our age has long understood the importance of promoting cultural heritage. In this context, the intangible heritage that is made up of the baggage of knowledge related to artisanal know-how represents the foundation of the determination of territorial identities. The School of Design of the University of Palermo was among the first to embrace the idea of using design as a tool to safeguard and evolve the skills of craftsmanship: in the words of Anna Maria Fundarò, founder in 1981 of the Industrial Design Institute of Palermo, the identity of Sicilian design is engraved in the DNA of a discipline whose meaning "is linked to our local …
De la patria (más) pequeña al mundo. Identidad nacional y socialismo español desde el País Valenciano (1931-1936)
2020
This article analyses the national discourse of Spanish socialism during the Second Republic and seeks to emphasise the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party’s identification with a Spanish national identity. Furthermore, by considering the case of the Valencian Region (País Valenciano), it points to ways in which that identity was expressed, showing the role of the local and regional spheres in the socialist interpretation of national identity. In this way, the Valencian example enables us to explore the situation “from below”, by studying political approaches, speeches, rites and practices in the militant press. The article argues that the national discourse of Spanish socialism found a solid…
